It is the eternal and essential question of identity. But we are never from just one place, never just one heritage. We are shaped by our family lineage, by our personalities, and by the borders of the country where we’re born and where we live.

This season at IJ, artists tease out nuanced definitions of identity and belonging, sharing their heritages through an artistic lens. Stretching from reimagined African-American work songs to the intersection of jazz and Japanese drumming, from embodied Native American stories to a melding of Chicano musical styles, this season’s artists offer a brilliant array of modern twists on artistic legacies.
